Myself, like most pet parents, are constantly on a mission to find safe, wholesome pet products. Whether you’re looking for food and treats, supplements, blankets or toys for your furry family members, I’ve found a little something for everyone! As a veterinarian for over 10 years, I have seen many trends come and go, but finding tried and true, and most importantly safe, products can be tough!
First and foremost, finding a well balanced food, with safe ingredients and a ton of research behind its formulation is a must! There is no wrong way to feed you fur babies, if the food has the right blend of vitamins and minerals and is well balanced. Cooking chicken breast with peas and carrots, is not going to be a balanced diet or considered nutritious over long periods of time. For a sick pet that you need to entice to eat for a day or two as they heal, this is okay, but I highly recommend something more appropriate for their stage of life for normal feeding! Whether you choose a custom mail ordered product for each pet or choose to feed a high quality kibble, finding a nutritious, science backed food will do wonders!!
Now to talk about treats!! There are soooo many darn treats and types of treats - training treats, regular treats, dental chews, hairball treats for cats and the list goes on and on and on! The goal should be to find treats and chews that ultimately fit your pets needs and lifestyle. As a rule of thumb, I try to stick to the same brands that formulate research backed foods. For dental products, finding a dental treat or chew that has the ‘Veterinary Oral Health Council’ or ‘VOHC’ seal of approval.
At the end of the day, always default to talking to your trusted family veterinarian, they know your particular pet and can ultimately make the best recommendations!
Now for the fun stuff - chew toys, blankets, beds, supplements and so much more! It’s soo much to get into, but many of these products are things I have used personally with my own pets or have seen great results amongst my patients.
